/etc/issue is sent before displaying a login prompt, and security auditors will recommend that you remove any identifying information from files like this. Checking /etc/redhat-release is a better choice if you must grep a file for a version number. Even better would be to check specifically for libc or kernel versions (using rpm, uname, or objdump) to decide whether LD_ASSUME_KERNEL is needed or not.
